IELTS WRITING TASK TWO. AUDIO ESSAY BANK. SECOND EDITION.

Built for listening, not for reading. No numbering, no symbols, no abbreviations. Every sentence is meant to survive a text to speech voice without confusion.

HOW TO USE THIS FILE.

Play it while commuting, walking, or doing something that does not need language. You are not trying to memorise whole essays. You are trying to make three things automatic. The shape of each essay type. The seven target structures. The two grammar errors that cost you the most.

Every thesis in this file is spoken twice. The first time, try to produce it yourself before the voice does. The second time, say it along with the voice. That is the whole method.

At the end of each section there is a drill that replays only the theses. At the end of the file there is a chain that replays all twenty four theses back to back. Those two drills are where the retention happens.

THE TWO ERROR PATTERNS TO LISTEN FOR.

Pattern one. Subject verb agreement. Your failures cluster in two places. First, abstract singular subjects. Words like exposure, growth, migration, scarcity, availability, perception, distance, effort, interaction, and packaging are singular, and they take a singular verb, even when a plural noun sits next to them. Second, after inversion. When the sentence opens with not only, the auxiliary carries the agreement, and the main verb stays in its bare form.

Pattern two. Tense collapse under load. The spine of a Task Two essay is present simple. Past simple appears only for a single dated historical fact. Present perfect appears only for a completed change that still matters now. Nothing else. If you notice yourself drifting between tenses inside one paragraph, that is the failure, and it is a load problem, not a knowledge problem.

Every item in this file ends with an agreement watch and a tense watch. Those two lines are the point of the item.

THE SEVEN TARGET STRUCTURES, EACH WITH A SAFE FALLBACK.

Use the target structure if it arrives cleanly. If it does not arrive within a few seconds, use the fallback and move on. A clean simple sentence outscores a broken complex one.

Structure one. Negative inversion. Not only does the current system pose a barrier, but it also deprives the economy of skilled workers. Fallback. The current system does not only pose a barrier. It also deprives the economy of skilled workers.

Structure two. Concession then assertion. While local action yields real benefits, it is nonetheless true that the problem is transnational. Fallback. Local action yields real benefits. Even so, the problem is transnational.

Structure three. Parallel concession. While those in favour argue one thing, those opposed stress another. Fallback. Supporters argue one thing. Opponents argue another.

Structure four. Participle clause. Granting workers control over their schedules, freelance arrangements allow flexibility. Fallback. Because freelance arrangements grant workers control over their schedules, they allow flexibility.

Structure five. The absent construction. Absent adequate investment, networks cannot meet demand. Fallback. Without adequate investment, networks cannot meet demand. The fallback is almost as strong and far less likely to break. Use it freely.

Structure six. Passive with a modal. Substantial funding must be allocated to public transit. Keep all three parts. The modal, then the word be, then the participle. Dropping the word be is the usual failure.

Structure seven. The cleft sentence. It is early exposure to sport that predicts adult preference. Fallback. Early exposure to sport is the strongest predictor of adult preference.

A NOTE ON PROMPT LABELS.

Several prompts in this file carry the wording to what extent do you agree or disagree, yet they are handled as one sided. That is deliberate. When a claim offers no workable middle ground, arguing both halves produces a weaker essay than committing to one position. The prompt wording does not oblige you to sit in the middle. It only asks you to say how far you go.

A NOTE ON SPELLING.

This file uses American spelling throughout. Enrollment, labor, favor, program. British spelling is equally acceptable in the exam. Mixing the two within one essay is what looks careless, so pick one before exam day and hold it.

SECTION ONE. OPINION PROMPTS, ONE SIDED POSITION.

The shape of this type. State the position in the introduction without hedging. Two body paragraphs, each with one reason and one concrete illustration. Conclusion restates the position and adds the consequence. No concession paragraph. That is what one sided means.

The target structure for all four prompts in this section is negative inversion in the thesis.

Item one. Free university education.

The question. Some people believe that university education should be free for all students. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The position. Agree.

Reason one. Financial barriers exclude qualified students from low income households. Reason two. Free education produces a more skilled national workforce.

Collocations to bank. Pose a barrier. Exacerbate inequality. A skilled workforce. Drive economic growth. An equitable system.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Not only does the current tuition system pose a significant barrier to low income students, but it also deprives the broader economy of a more skilled and adaptable workforce.

Again, with the voice.

Not only does the current tuition system pose a significant barrier to low income students, but it also deprives the broader economy of a more skilled and adaptable workforce.

Topic sentence one. The financial burden of university fees excludes many academically capable students from pursuing higher education.

Illustration. In countries where tuition remains prohibitively high, enrollment rates among low income families consistently lag behind those of wealthier peers.

Topic sentence two. Free access to higher education, moreover, equips a nation with a more highly skilled labor pool.

Illustration. In Germany, where public universities charge minimal fees, a higher proportion of graduates enter technical and scientific fields.

Conclusion. University education should therefore be provided free of charge, since its long term societal benefits outweigh the fiscal cost to the state.

Agreement watch. After the inversion, the auxiliary does carries the agreement, so the verb stays as the bare form pose. The second half of the sentence has no inversion, so the verb returns to deprives with the s.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout. There is no reason for a past tense anywhere in this essay.

Item two. Zoos.

The question. Many argue that zoos serve no useful purpose and should be closed permanently. Do you agree or disagree.

The position. Disagree.

Reason one. Zoos sustain breeding programs for endangered species. Reason two. Direct contact with animals builds public support for conservation funding.

Collocations to bank. Endangered species. A breeding program. Foster public support. Raise awareness. A captive population.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Not only do modern zoos sustain critical breeding programs for endangered species, but they also cultivate public support for conservation efforts that would otherwise remain abstract and distant.

Again, with the voice.

Not only do modern zoos sustain critical breeding programs for endangered species, but they also cultivate public support for conservation efforts that would otherwise remain abstract and distant.

Topic sentence one. Captive breeding programs run by accredited zoos have prevented the extinction of several species whose wild populations had collapsed.

Illustration. The California condor, reduced to fewer than thirty individuals in the wild, was brought back from the brink of extinction almost entirely through coordinated zoo breeding efforts.

Topic sentence two. Direct exposure to living animals, moreover, generates a level of public engagement that documentaries and textbooks rarely achieve.

Illustration. Visitors who observe endangered species firsthand are measurably more likely to donate to conservation charities afterward.

Conclusion. Zoos should therefore remain open, provided they continue prioritizing conservation and welfare standards over pure entertainment.

Agreement watch. The subject zoos is plural, so the inversion takes do, not does, and the verb stays bare as sustain. The second half takes cultivate without the s, because the subject they is plural.

Tense watch. Three tenses appear here and each one is doing a job. Present simple carries the argument. Present perfect in have prevented marks a completed change with present consequences. Past simple in was brought back is scoped to one historical event. That is controlled tense use, not drift.

Item three. Homework before the age of twelve.

The question. It is often said that children should not be given homework before the age of twelve. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The position. Agree.

Reason one. Early academic pressure undermines intrinsic motivation. Reason two. Unstructured play develops skills that homework cannot replicate.

Collocations to bank. Intrinsic motivation. Academic pressure. Unstructured play. Cognitive development. A formative stage.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Not only does early academic pressure undermine children's intrinsic motivation to learn, but it also displaces the unstructured play essential to healthy cognitive development.

Again, with the voice.

Not only does early academic pressure undermine children's intrinsic motivation to learn, but it also displaces the unstructured play essential to healthy cognitive development.

Topic sentence one. Assigning formal homework before adolescence risks converting learning into an obligation rather than a source of curiosity.

Illustration. Finnish primary schools, which assign minimal homework before the age of twelve, consistently rank among the highest performers in international literacy assessments.

Topic sentence two. Unstructured play, furthermore, cultivates problem solving and social skills that structured academic tasks are poorly suited to develop.

Illustration. Children who spend significant time in unsupervised play demonstrate stronger negotiation and conflict resolution skills than peers whose time is dominated by academic tasks.

Conclusion. Homework should therefore be withheld until early adolescence, when children are better equipped to manage structured academic demands.

Agreement watch. Two traps here. After the inversion, does undermine, then displaces once the inversion ends. And the gerund subject assigning formal homework is singular, so it takes risks with the s. Gerund subjects are always singular, however long the phrase that follows them.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout. Notice that the Finland example needs no past tense, because it describes a standing arrangement rather than a finished event.

Item four. The death penalty.

The question. Some believe that the death penalty is a necessary deterrent to serious crime. Do you agree or disagree.

The position. Disagree.

Reason one. Comparative data show no consistent deterrent effect on life imprisonment. Reason two. Irreversibility creates unacceptable risk given wrongful convictions.

Collocations to bank. A deterrent effect. A wrongful conviction. An irreversible punishment. Comparative data. Undermine confidence in.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Not only does comparative crime data fail to show a consistent deterrent effect from capital punishment, but the irreversibility of execution also creates a risk no justice system can ethically justify.

Again, with the voice.

Not only does comparative crime data fail to show a consistent deterrent effect from capital punishment, but the irreversibility of execution also creates a risk no justice system can ethically justify.

Topic sentence one. Jurisdictions that have abolished the death penalty show no measurable rise in serious crime relative to those that retain it.

Illustration. Homicide rates in Canada continued to decline steadily in the decades following the abolition of capital punishment in nineteen seventy six.

Topic sentence two. The permanence of execution, moreover, leaves no possibility of correction when new evidence later overturns a conviction.

Illustration. Numerous death row inmates in the United States have been exonerated by evidence that emerged only after years of imprisonment, some narrowly avoiding execution.

Conclusion. The death penalty should therefore be abolished, since its deterrent value remains unproven while its risks are irreversible.

Agreement watch. This item hides three traps in a row. Does fail after the inversion. Then irreversibility, an abstract singular subject, takes creates with the s, even though the plural word execution sits nearby. Then jurisdictions that have abolished is plural, so the main verb is show without the s. Slow down on this one.

Tense watch. Continued to decline is past simple because the abolition is a dated event. Have been exonerated is present perfect because those exonerations bear on the present argument. Everything else stays present simple.

Section one drill. The four theses in a row. Say each one before the voice does.

Not only does the current tuition system pose a significant barrier to low income students, but it also deprives the broader economy of a more skilled and adaptable workforce.

Not only do modern zoos sustain critical breeding programs for endangered species, but they also cultivate public support for conservation efforts that would otherwise remain abstract and distant.

Not only does early academic pressure undermine children's intrinsic motivation to learn, but it also displaces the unstructured play essential to healthy cognitive development.

Not only does comparative crime data fail to show a consistent deterrent effect from capital punishment, but the irreversibility of execution also creates a risk no justice system can ethically justify.

Notice what changes across those four. Does with a singular subject. Do with a plural subject. The bare verb after the auxiliary. The s returning once the inversion ends. That is the whole structure.

SECTION TWO. OPINION PROMPTS WITH A RESERVATION.

The shape of this type. Commit to a position, then name the limit of that position. Body one supports the position. Body two concedes, then asserts the reservation. The conclusion combines both rather than choosing.

The target structure for all four prompts in this section is concession then assertion in the second body paragraph.

Item five. Local pollution against global climate policy.

The question. Some people think that governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution rather than tackling climate change globally. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The position. Largely agree, with a reservation.

Support. Local pollution has immediate, measurable health effects. Reservation. Climate change is transnational and needs coordinated action beyond local measures.

Collocations to bank. An immediate health impact. A pressing concern. Transnational in scope. Coordinated action. An isolated measure.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Governments should largely prioritize reducing local pollution, though climate change cannot be addressed through domestic measures alone.

Again, with the voice.

Governments should largely prioritize reducing local pollution, though climate change cannot be addressed through domestic measures alone.

Topic sentence one. Local pollution control produces immediate, measurable improvements in public health.

Illustration. Cities that have restricted vehicle emissions, such as London with its low emission zone, report swift reductions in respiratory illness.

Topic sentence two, concession then assertion. While reducing local pollution yields tangible short term benefits, it is nonetheless true that climate change stems from transnational processes no single government can resolve in isolation.

Illustration. Rising sea levels driven by global emissions threaten coastal nations regardless of their own domestic pollution record.

Conclusion. Environmental policy should therefore combine vigorous local pollution control with sustained participation in international climate agreements.

Agreement watch. Reducing local pollution is a gerund subject and therefore singular. It takes produces and yields, both with the s.

Tense watch. Have restricted is present perfect for a completed policy change that still holds. The rest is present simple. Do not let the perfect spread to the surrounding verbs.

Item six. Hard work against circumstance.

The question. Many believe that success in life is determined mainly by hard work rather than luck or circumstance. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The position. Largely agree, with a reservation.

Support. Sustained effort compounds skill and opportunity over time. Reservation. Circumstances of birth constrain what effort alone can achieve.

Collocations to bank. Compound over time. A level playing field. Circumstances of birth. A structural barrier. Sustained effort.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Hard work largely determines individual success, though the circumstances a person is born into inevitably shape how far that effort can go.

Again, with the voice.

Hard work largely determines individual success, though the circumstances a person is born into inevitably shape how far that effort can go.

Topic sentence one. Sustained effort compounds over time, allowing skills and opportunities to accumulate in ways that isolated talent alone cannot replicate.

Illustration. Many self made entrepreneurs attribute their success not to exceptional talent but to years of persistent, incremental effort.

Topic sentence two, concession then assertion. While hard work remains indispensable, it is nonetheless true that a child born into poverty faces structural barriers no amount of individual effort can fully overcome.

Illustration. Access to quality education, itself heavily dependent on family wealth and geography, strongly predicts long term career outcomes regardless of individual diligence.

Conclusion. Success is therefore best understood as hard work operating within, rather than independent of, the circumstances one is born into.

Agreement watch. Effort is an abstract singular subject and takes compounds. In the illustration, access is singular and takes predicts, even though the plural words wealth and geography sit between the subject and the verb. That gap is exactly where the error appears under time pressure.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout. This topic invites past narrative about individual lives. Resist it.

Item seven. The survival of traditional shops.

The question. Some argue that traditional shops will disappear entirely because of online shopping. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The position. Largely disagree, with a reservation.

Support against the claim. Some retail experiences cannot be replicated online. Reservation. Many retail categories have genuinely declined and will keep shrinking.

Collocations to bank. A sensory experience. An irreplaceable advantage. Shrink in scale. A niche market. Immediate gratification.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Traditional shops are unlikely to disappear entirely, though online shopping will continue to shrink their scale and role considerably.

Again, with the voice.

Traditional shops are unlikely to disappear entirely, though online shopping will continue to shrink their scale and role considerably.

Topic sentence one. Certain retail experiences, such as trying on clothing or selecting fresh produce, offer sensory and practical advantages that online platforms cannot replicate.

Illustration. Specialty bookstores and independent boutiques have maintained loyal customer bases precisely by emphasizing in person browsing and expert recommendation.

Topic sentence two, concession then assertion. While these niche advantages will likely preserve certain categories of physical retail, it is undeniable that convenience driven categories, such as electronics and household goods, will continue to migrate almost entirely online.

Illustration. Large electronics retailers in many countries have already closed a substantial share of their physical stores in response to declining foot traffic.

Conclusion. Physical retail will therefore persist in a narrower, more specialized form rather than vanish altogether.

Agreement watch. Shops is plural and takes are. Experiences is plural and takes offer without the s, even though the singular words clothing and produce intervene.

Tense watch. This essay mixes present simple, future with will, and present perfect. Each future form attaches to a prediction. Each present perfect attaches to a change already underway. Keep those two roles apart and the essay stays clean.

Item eight. Parents as teachers.

The question. It is sometimes claimed that parents are the best teachers a child can have. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The position. Largely agree, with a reservation.

Support. Parents transmit values and behavior through constant, trust based interaction. Reservation. Formal educators provide structured knowledge parents typically cannot.

Collocations to bank. Foundational values. Trust based interaction. Specialized instruction. A structured curriculum. Shape early behavior.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Parents are largely the most effective teachers of foundational values and behavior, although formal educators remain essential for structured academic knowledge.

Again, with the voice.

Parents are largely the most effective teachers of foundational values and behavior, although formal educators remain essential for structured academic knowledge.

Topic sentence one. Constant, trust based interaction allows parents to shape a child's early behavior and values more effectively than any institution.

Illustration. Children raised in households that model honesty and empathy consistently demonstrate stronger prosocial behavior later in life.

Topic sentence two, concession then assertion. While parental influence is unmatched in shaping character, it is clear that specialized academic subjects require the structured expertise only trained educators can provide.

Illustration. Few parents, however devoted, possess the specialized training required to teach advanced mathematics or laboratory science effectively.

Conclusion. Parents and formal educators therefore fulfill complementary, rather than competing, roles in a child's development.

Agreement watch. Interaction is an abstract singular subject and takes allows. Parents is plural and takes are. Few parents is plural and takes possess without the s. Three different subjects, three different endings, inside one short essay.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout. The phrase later in life describes a general pattern, not a past event, so it changes nothing.

Section two drill. The four theses in a row.

Governments should largely prioritize reducing local pollution, though climate change cannot be addressed through domestic measures alone.

Hard work largely determines individual success, though the circumstances a person is born into inevitably shape how far that effort can go.

Traditional shops are unlikely to disappear entirely, though online shopping will continue to shrink their scale and role considerably.

Parents are largely the most effective teachers of foundational values and behavior, although formal educators remain essential for structured academic knowledge.

Notice the machinery. Position first, then the word though or although, then the limit. The reservation never softens the position. It bounds it.

SECTION THREE. DISCUSSION PROMPTS.

The shape of this type. Both views get equal grammatical weight and no evaluative adjective. Your own opinion waits until the conclusion. Examiners penalise a discussion essay that reveals its verdict in the introduction, because the task asks you to discuss before you judge.

The target structure for all four prompts in this section is the parallel concession.

Item nine. Compulsory against optional community service.

The question. Some people think that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school education, while others believe it should remain optional. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

View A. Mandatory service instills civic responsibility. View B. Optional service preserves genuine motivation.

Collocations to bank. Instill a sense of civic duty. Foster empathy. Genuine motivation. An imposed obligation. Dilute the value of.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Educators disagree over whether community service should be compulsory or optional during high school, each side citing distinct benefits for adolescent development.

Again, with the voice.

Educators disagree over whether community service should be compulsory or optional during high school, each side citing distinct benefits for adolescent development.

The parallel concession. While those in favor of compulsory service argue that mandatory participation instills a lasting sense of civic duty regardless of initial interest, those who favor an optional approach stress that volunteering imposed as an obligation dilutes the genuine motivation that gives service its value.

Illustration for view A. Schools that require a fixed number of service hours report that most students continue similar activities well after graduation.

Illustration for view B. Students compelled to volunteer, conversely, often complete only the minimum requirement, treating the activity as a formality.

Conclusion, where the opinion finally appears. On balance, a modest compulsory minimum, combined with the freedom to exceed it voluntarily, appears to capture the benefits both sides describe.

Agreement watch. Both halves of the parallel sentence run on the same pattern. Those who argue is plural, so argue and stress carry no s. Inside each half, the reported clause has a singular subject, so participation instills and volunteering dilutes both take the s. Plural outside, singular inside.

Tense watch. Present simple everywhere. A discussion essay describes positions people currently hold, so there is nothing to put in the past.

Item ten. Remote work against office presence.

The question. Some believe that employees should be allowed to work from home permanently, while others think office presence is essential for productivity. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

View A. Remote work sustains focus by removing commuting and office distractions. View B. In person presence enables spontaneous collaboration and easier oversight.

Collocations to bank. Sustained focus. Spontaneous collaboration. A commuting burden. Close oversight. Foster cohesion.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Opinion remains divided over whether employees should work from home permanently or return to the office, with each side pointing to a different driver of productivity.

Again, with the voice.

Opinion remains divided over whether employees should work from home permanently or return to the office, with each side pointing to a different driver of productivity.

The parallel concession. While those in favor of permanent remote work argue that eliminating the daily commute and office distractions sustains deeper focus, those who favor office presence stress that physical proximity fosters spontaneous collaboration that remote tools struggle to replicate.

Illustration for view A. Employees working remotely frequently report completing complex tasks faster once freed from open office interruptions.

Illustration for view B. Teams working in shared physical spaces, conversely, tend to resolve small problems through brief hallway conversations that would otherwise require scheduled calls.

Conclusion. A hybrid arrangement, combining a few in office days for collaboration with remote time for focused work, appears best positioned to capture the strengths of both models.

Agreement watch. Eliminating the daily commute and office distractions is a single gerund subject, so it takes sustains with the s, even though two plural nouns sit at the end of the phrase. Proximity is singular and takes fosters. This is your highest risk sentence type in the whole section.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout, with the modal would in the final illustration doing hypothetical work. A modal is not a tense shift.

Item eleven. Celebrity influence on young people.

The question. Some people think that celebrities have too much influence on young people's views, while others think this influence is exaggerated. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

View A. Celebrity endorsement shapes adolescent attitudes and consumer behavior disproportionately. View B. Peers and family remain stronger influences, and celebrity effects are overstated.

Collocations to bank. Shape adolescent attitudes. Disproportionate influence. A peer group. Overstate the effect. Consumer behavior.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Commentators disagree over whether celebrities exert a disproportionate influence on young people's views or whether this effect has been considerably overstated.

Again, with the voice.

Commentators disagree over whether celebrities exert a disproportionate influence on young people's views or whether this effect has been considerably overstated.

The parallel concession. While those concerned about celebrity influence argue that endorsements and public statements shape adolescent attitudes and purchasing habits disproportionately, those skeptical of this claim maintain that peer groups and family remain the dominant forces behind a young person's values.

Illustration for view A. Surveys of teenage consumer behavior consistently show spikes in product interest following a celebrity endorsement.

Illustration for view B. Longitudinal studies of adolescent development, however, attribute far more variance in values and behavior to family upbringing and close friendships than to media figures.

Conclusion. Celebrity influence likely shapes surface preferences such as fashion and consumer choices more than it shapes deeper values, which remain primarily rooted in family and peer relationships.

Agreement watch. Surveys of teenage consumer behavior takes show without the s, because surveys is the head noun and behavior is only inside the modifying phrase. Studies of adolescent development takes attribute for the same reason. When a long phrase separates subject from verb, find the head noun and ignore everything after it.

Tense watch. Has been overstated is present perfect passive, used deliberately for a claim about the current state of an argument. Everything else stays present simple.

Item twelve. Food regulation against personal responsibility.

The question. Some argue that the government should regulate the food industry more strictly to reduce obesity, while others believe individuals should be responsible for their own health choices. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

View A. Regulation counters industry incentives that exploit consumer behavior. View B. Personal responsibility preserves autonomy and avoids paternalistic overreach.

Collocations to bank. Exploit consumer behavior. Personal autonomy. Paternalistic overreach. Misleading labeling. Public health outcomes.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Public health advocates and proponents of personal responsibility disagree over whether government regulation or individual choice should drive efforts to reduce obesity.

Again, with the voice.

Public health advocates and proponents of personal responsibility disagree over whether government regulation or individual choice should drive efforts to reduce obesity.

The parallel concession. While public health advocates argue that stricter regulation of marketing and labeling is necessary to counter an industry that actively exploits consumer psychology, those who favor personal responsibility stress that shifting accountability to the state undermines individual autonomy and sets a paternalistic precedent.

Illustration for view A. Countries that have introduced mandatory sugar taxes have recorded measurable declines in sugary drink consumption within a few years.

Illustration for view B. Critics of such measures, conversely, point out that adults capable of managing other major life decisions should retain the freedom to determine their own dietary habits.

Conclusion. Targeted regulation of clearly deceptive industry practices, combined with continued individual freedom over everyday food choices, likely balances both concerns more effectively than either extreme.

Agreement watch. Stricter regulation of marketing and labeling is singular and takes is. Shifting accountability to the state is a gerund subject and takes undermines and sets, both with the s. Countries takes have recorded. Critics takes point out. Four subjects, four decisions, made in about ninety words.

Tense watch. Present perfect appears twice in the first illustration and both instances are earned, because the policy and its result are completed and still relevant. Do not let it bleed into the second illustration, which stays present simple.

Section three drill. The four theses in a row.

Educators disagree over whether community service should be compulsory or optional during high school, each side citing distinct benefits for adolescent development.

Opinion remains divided over whether employees should work from home permanently or return to the office, with each side pointing to a different driver of productivity.

Commentators disagree over whether celebrities exert a disproportionate influence on young people's views or whether this effect has been considerably overstated.

Public health advocates and proponents of personal responsibility disagree over whether government regulation or individual choice should drive efforts to reduce obesity.

Notice the frame. A group disagrees over whether A or B. Neither option carries an adjective that judges it. That neutrality is what the task is testing.

SECTION FOUR. ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE PROMPTS.

The shape of this type. One paragraph for the advantage, one for the disadvantage, each opening with a participle clause. The conclusion weighs them rather than counting them, and says for whom the trade off falls which way.

The target structure for all four prompts in this section is the participle clause. One warning before you start. A participle clause attaches to whatever noun follows the comma. If that noun is not the thing performing the participle, the sentence dangles. Item fourteen is the live case.

Item thirteen. Freelance work.

The question. More and more people are choosing to work freelance rather than in traditional full time employment. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.

Advantage. Freelancing grants control over schedule. Disadvantage. Freelancing removes stable income and benefits.

Collocations to bank. Exercise control over. Financial precarity. A stable income. Employer provided benefits. A flexible arrangement.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

The growing shift toward freelance work carries distinct advantages and disadvantages for the modern workforce.

Again, with the voice.

The growing shift toward freelance work carries distinct advantages and disadvantages for the modern workforce.

Topic sentence one, participle clause. Granting workers direct control over their schedules, freelance arrangements allow individuals balancing family or health demands to structure their hours around personal needs.

Illustration. Parents of young children frequently cite scheduling flexibility as their primary reason for leaving salaried positions.

Topic sentence two, participle clause. Lacking the stability of a fixed salary, freelance workers remain exposed to considerable financial precarity.

Illustration. Without employer provided health insurance or retirement contributions, many freelancers must independently absorb costs salaried employees receive automatically.

Conclusion. Freelance work therefore offers valuable autonomy at the cost of financial security, a trade off each worker must weigh individually.

Attachment watch. Granting attaches to freelance arrangements, and the arrangements are indeed what grant the control. Lacking attaches to freelance workers, and the workers are indeed what lack the stability. Both clean.

Agreement watch. The shift is singular and takes carries, despite the plural word advantages later in the sentence. Parents is plural and takes cite.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout, with the modal must in the final illustration.

Item fourteen. The four day work week. The dangling participle case.

The question. An increasing number of countries are adopting a four day work week. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this development.

Advantage. A shorter week reduces burnout and raises output per hour. Disadvantage. Compressed hours strain industries that need daily coverage.

Collocations to bank. Reduce burnout. Productivity per hour. Employee retention. Daily coverage. Client facing operations.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

The move toward a four day work week carries clear benefits for employee wellbeing alongside notable operational costs for certain industries.

Again, with the voice.

The move toward a four day work week carries clear benefits for employee wellbeing alongside notable operational costs for certain industries.

Topic sentence one, participle clause. Reducing weekly hours without cutting pay, the four day model has been shown to lower burnout and raise output per hour in several trial programs.

Illustration. A widely cited trial in Iceland found that participating employees reported improved wellbeing while maintaining, and in some cases increasing, overall output.

Topic sentence two. Here is the trap. The tempting version runs, compressing the same workload into fewer days, service industries face considerable strain. Listen to what that sentence actually claims. It claims that the service industries are the ones doing the compressing, when in fact they are the ones absorbing it. The participle has attached to the wrong noun.

The safe rewrite. Because the same workload is compressed into fewer days, service industries that depend on continuous daily coverage face considerable strain.

Illustration. Hospitals and retail businesses adopting the model have struggled to maintain adequate staffing on the additional day off, often requiring costly rotating schedules.

Conclusion. A four day work week therefore benefits knowledge based industries more readily than sectors requiring constant client facing presence.

Attachment watch. The first participle is fine, because the model is what reduces the hours. The second one dangles, and the fix is not a better participle but a different construction altogether. When the noun after the comma is the object of the action rather than its agent, abandon the participle and open with because.

Agreement watch. The move is singular and takes carries. Hospitals and retail businesses is plural and takes have struggled.

Tense watch. Found and reported are past simple because the Iceland trial is a single completed study. Have struggled is present perfect because the difficulty is ongoing. The rest is present simple.

Item fifteen. Cashless payment systems.

The question. Many cities are replacing physical cash with digital payment systems. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this shift.

Advantage. Digital payments increase transaction speed and reduce tax evasion and petty theft. Disadvantage. Cashless systems exclude people without bank access or digital literacy.

Collocations to bank. Transaction speed. Tax evasion. Financial exclusion. Digital literacy. Banking infrastructure.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

The shift toward digital payment systems offers clear gains in efficiency and transparency while introducing new risks of financial exclusion.

Again, with the voice.

The shift toward digital payment systems offers clear gains in efficiency and transparency while introducing new risks of financial exclusion.

Topic sentence one, participle clause. Accelerating transaction speed and reducing opportunities for tax evasion, digital payment systems offer measurable advantages over cash based economies.

Illustration. Sweden, among the most cashless societies in the world, has seen a marked reduction in small scale tax evasion since the widespread adoption of digital payments.

Topic sentence two, participle clause. Lacking reliable access to banking infrastructure, however, many elderly and low income residents risk exclusion from a fully cashless economy.

Illustration. Older residents in rural areas, where digital literacy and internet access remain limited, frequently report difficulty completing even routine transactions without cash.

Conclusion. Cities pursuing cashless systems should therefore maintain limited cash infrastructure to avoid excluding vulnerable populations.

Attachment watch. The systems do the accelerating. The residents do the lacking. Both clean.

Agreement watch. The shift is singular and takes offers. Residents is plural and takes risk without the s, and then report without the s in the illustration, where digital literacy and internet access sit between the subject and the verb as a distraction.

Tense watch. Has seen is present perfect, tied to the phrase since the adoption, which requires it. Everything else is present simple.

Item sixteen. Studying entirely online.

The question. More students are choosing to study entirely online rather than attend university in person. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.

Advantage. Online study removes geographic and financial barriers and allows flexible scheduling. Disadvantage. Remote study reduces the informal peer contact that shapes early careers.

Collocations to bank. A geographic barrier. A flexible schedule. Informal networking. Professional development. A sense of isolation.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Studying entirely online removes significant barriers to access while weakening the informal social networks universities have traditionally provided.

Again, with the voice.

Studying entirely online removes significant barriers to access while weakening the informal social networks universities have traditionally provided.

Topic sentence one, participle clause. Removing geographic and financial barriers, online study allows students to pursue a degree while continuing to work or care for family.

Illustration. Working parents enrolled in online degree programs frequently cite scheduling flexibility as the reason they could pursue higher education at all.

Topic sentence two, participle clause. Lacking the informal, face to face interaction of a physical campus, however, online students often miss out on the networking opportunities that shape early careers.

Illustration. Graduates of fully online programs report fewer professional connections from their studies than peers who attended in person.

Conclusion. Online education therefore expands access considerably, even as it demands new and deliberate efforts to replace the networking that campus life once provided informally.

Attachment watch. Online study does the removing. Online students do the lacking. Both clean.

Agreement watch. The thesis opens with a gerund subject, studying entirely online, which is singular and takes removes. Online study is singular and takes allows. Graduates is plural and takes report. Notice that the first illustration puts a long modifier between parents and cite, which is where the s tends to appear by mistake.

Tense watch. Attended is past simple, correctly scoped to what those peers did. Everything else is present simple.

Section four drill. The four theses in a row.

The growing shift toward freelance work carries distinct advantages and disadvantages for the modern workforce.

The move toward a four day work week carries clear benefits for employee wellbeing alongside notable operational costs for certain industries.

The shift toward digital payment systems offers clear gains in efficiency and transparency while introducing new risks of financial exclusion.

Studying entirely online removes significant barriers to access while weakening the informal social networks universities have traditionally provided.

And the one sentence to carry out of this section. When the noun after the comma is not the thing performing the participle, drop the participle and open with because.

SECTION FIVE. PROBLEM AND SOLUTION PROMPTS.

The shape of this type. One paragraph diagnosing the cause, one prescribing the remedy. The conclusion names both halves. A common failure is spending the whole essay on causes and rushing the solutions. Give them equal space.

Two target structures here. For the causes paragraph, the absent construction. For the solutions paragraph, a passive with a modal. Remember the fallback for the absent construction is simply the word without, and it costs you almost nothing.

Item seventeen. Traffic congestion.

The question. Traffic congestion has become a serious problem in many major cities. What are the causes, and what measures could be taken to solve it.

Cause. Urban population growth outpaces road and transit infrastructure. Solution. Governments invest in public transit and introduce congestion pricing.

Collocations to bank. Outpace infrastructure. Peak commuting hours. Congestion pricing. Allocate funding. Ease the burden.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Traffic congestion in major cities stems primarily from unchecked population growth, and effective solutions require significant investment in public infrastructure.

Again, with the voice.

Traffic congestion in major cities stems primarily from unchecked population growth, and effective solutions require significant investment in public infrastructure.

Causes paragraph, absent construction. Absent adequate investment in road and transit infrastructure, rapid urban population growth has left many cities' transport networks unable to accommodate current demand.

Illustration. In rapidly expanding cities such as Manila, road capacity has remained largely unchanged for decades despite a sharp rise in vehicle ownership.

Solutions paragraph, passive with a modal. Substantial funding must be allocated to expanding public transit networks if congestion is to be meaningfully reduced.

Illustration. Cities that have introduced congestion pricing, such as Stockholm, have seen measurable declines in peak hour traffic within a few years of implementation.

Conclusion. Addressing traffic congestion therefore requires both restraining private vehicle use and expanding affordable public transport alternatives.

Structure watch. The passive keeps three parts. Must, then be, then allocated. Say those three words together as one unit and the construction will not break under pressure.

Agreement watch. Growth is an abstract singular subject and takes has left, not have left, despite the plural word networks arriving immediately afterward.

Tense watch. Present perfect is doing real work in has left and has remained, because both describe a condition that built up and still holds. The solutions paragraph switches to modals and present simple, and that switch is intentional rather than drift.

Item eighteen. Teenage mental health.

The question. Mental health issues among teenagers have increased significantly in recent years. What are the causes of this trend, and what solutions can be proposed.

Cause. Constant social media comparison erodes self esteem. Solution. Schools implement structured screening and reliable access to counseling.

Collocations to bank. Erode self esteem. Chronic anxiety. A depressive episode. A screening protocol. Access to counseling.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Rising mental health difficulties among teenagers stem largely from constant social media exposure, and addressing the trend requires structured support within schools.

Again, with the voice.

Rising mental health difficulties among teenagers stem largely from constant social media exposure, and addressing the trend requires structured support within schools.

Causes paragraph, absent construction. Absent meaningful limits on social media use, constant exposure to curated, idealized images has steadily eroded adolescent self esteem.

Illustration. Teenagers who report the heaviest social media use consistently show higher rates of anxiety and depressive symptoms than peers with limited exposure.

Solutions paragraph, passive with a modal. Structured mental health screening must be integrated into standard school health services if early symptoms are to be identified before they escalate.

Illustration. Schools that have introduced routine counselor check ins report earlier identification of at risk students and lower rates of crisis intervention.

Conclusion. Reversing this trend therefore requires both limiting harmful social media exposure and embedding accessible mental health support directly within schools.

Structure watch. Two passives with modals in this item. Must be integrated, and are to be identified. Both keep all three parts.

Agreement watch. Exposure is singular and takes has eroded, even though the plural word images sits directly before the verb. This is the single most reliable trap in the whole file. Difficulties in the thesis is plural and takes stem without the s. Addressing the trend is a gerund subject and takes requires with the s.

Tense watch. Has eroded is present perfect for a gradual completed change. The illustration is present simple because it describes a standing pattern. The solutions paragraph is modal and present simple.

Item nineteen. Affordable housing.

The question. Many countries are experiencing a shortage of affordable housing in urban areas. What are the causes, and what steps could governments take to address it.

Cause. Migration into cities outpaces housing construction, pushing prices beyond average earnings. Solution. Governments reform zoning and subsidize affordable construction.

Collocations to bank. Outpace construction. Beyond the reach of. A zoning restriction. Subsidized housing. An affordability crisis.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Urban housing shortages stem primarily from construction failing to keep pace with migration, and resolving the crisis requires direct government intervention in the housing market.

Again, with the voice.

Urban housing shortages stem primarily from construction failing to keep pace with migration, and resolving the crisis requires direct government intervention in the housing market.

Causes paragraph, absent construction. Absent sufficient investment in new housing construction, rapid urban migration has driven property prices far beyond the reach of average earners.

Illustration. In cities such as Vancouver and Auckland, housing supply has grown only marginally despite decades of sustained population growth.

Solutions paragraph, passive with a modal. Zoning restrictions that limit housing density should be relaxed, and direct subsidies must be offered to developers willing to build affordable units.

Illustration. Vienna's long standing subsidized housing program has kept a substantial share of the city's rental market affordable even as private prices elsewhere have risen sharply.

Conclusion. Addressing the affordability crisis therefore requires governments to reshape both zoning policy and construction incentives, rather than relying on the market to correct itself.

Structure watch. Two passives in one sentence. Should be relaxed, and must be offered. Notice that the modal changes between them, which is a deliberate difference in force. Should for the permissive step, must for the obligatory one.

Agreement watch. Shortages is plural and takes stem without the s. Migration is singular and takes has driven. Resolving the crisis is a gerund subject and takes requires. Three different decisions inside three consecutive sentences, which is why this item repays a slow listen.

Tense watch. Present perfect throughout the causes paragraph, because every one of those changes accumulated and still holds. Modals in the solutions paragraph.

Item twenty. Ocean plastic.

The question. Plastic waste in oceans has become a major environmental issue. What are the main causes, and what can be done to solve it.

Cause. Weak waste management in coastal regions lets cheap single use packaging reach waterways. Solution. Governments ban single use plastics and fund coastal collection systems.

Collocations to bank. Enter waterways. Single use packaging. Waste management infrastructure. A coastal region. A marine ecosystem.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Ocean plastic pollution stems largely from inadequate waste management in coastal regions, and curbing it requires both regulatory and infrastructural intervention.

Again, with the voice.

Ocean plastic pollution stems largely from inadequate waste management in coastal regions, and curbing it requires both regulatory and infrastructural intervention.

Causes paragraph, absent construction. Absent adequate waste collection infrastructure in many coastal regions, cheap single use plastic packaging routinely enters rivers and, eventually, the ocean.

Illustration. Several major rivers in Southeast Asia, lacking comprehensive waste management systems, account for a disproportionate share of global ocean plastic input.

Solutions paragraph, passive with a modal. Single use plastics should be banned in regions with the weakest waste infrastructure, and substantial funding must be directed toward coastal collection systems.

Illustration. Countries that have introduced nationwide bans on single use plastic bags have reported measurable reductions in coastal litter within a few years.

Conclusion. Reducing ocean plastic pollution therefore requires governments to combine restrictions on single use packaging with sustained investment in waste infrastructure.

Agreement watch. Packaging is the head noun and it is singular, so it takes enters with the s, even though rivers and regions crowd the sentence around it. Rivers is plural and takes account without the s. Funding is singular and takes must be directed.

Tense watch. The causes paragraph is present simple, because it describes an ongoing mechanism rather than an accumulated change. Compare that with the previous three items, where present perfect was correct. The difference is worth noticing. A mechanism that operates now takes present simple. A change that has built up takes present perfect.

Section five drill. The four theses in a row.

Traffic congestion in major cities stems primarily from unchecked population growth, and effective solutions require significant investment in public infrastructure.

Rising mental health difficulties among teenagers stem largely from constant social media exposure, and addressing the trend requires structured support within schools.

Urban housing shortages stem primarily from construction failing to keep pace with migration, and resolving the crisis requires direct government intervention in the housing market.

Ocean plastic pollution stems largely from inadequate waste management in coastal regions, and curbing it requires both regulatory and infrastructural intervention.

Listen to the verb stem across those four. Stems, stem, stem, stems. Singular, plural, plural, singular. That alternation is the exam trap in miniature.

SECTION SIX. TWO PART OR DIRECT QUESTION PROMPTS.

The shape of this type. Two questions, two body paragraphs, one paragraph each. Answer both. The most common failure in this type is not grammar but coverage, because candidates answer the first question thoroughly and the second one in a single line.

The target structure for all four prompts in this section is the cleft sentence, which places one element under a spotlight. Every cleft in this section has a singular subject, so the verb is always singular.

Item twenty one. Physical against sedentary leisure.

The question. Some people prefer to spend their leisure time on physical activities, while others prefer sedentary hobbies. Why do you think this is the case. What can be done to encourage more people to be physically active.

Answer one. Preference is shaped by childhood upbringing and access to facilities. Answer two. Affordable, accessible facilities and incentives shift adult behavior.

Collocations to bank. Shaped by. A sedentary lifestyle. Accessible facilities. A marked preference. Incentivize participation.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

People's preference for physical or sedentary leisure stems largely from early upbringing, and several practical measures could encourage wider participation in physical activity.

Again, with the voice.

People's preference for physical or sedentary leisure stems largely from early upbringing, and several practical measures could encourage wider participation in physical activity.

Answer to question one, cleft. It is early exposure to sport during childhood that most strongly predicts an adult's preference for physical leisure activities.

Illustration. Individuals raised in households that valued outdoor play are considerably more likely to maintain active hobbies later in life.

Answer to question two, cleft. It is the availability of affordable, accessible facilities that most effectively encourages sedentary individuals to adopt physical activity.

Illustration. Local governments that have built free public sports facilities, such as outdoor gyms, report increased participation among residents who previously exercised rarely.

Conclusion. Personal preference for physical activity is therefore rooted in upbringing, yet accessible infrastructure can meaningfully shift behavior even later in life.

Agreement watch. Exposure predicts. Availability encourages. Both singular, both with the s, and in both cases a plural noun sits between the subject and the verb, waiting to pull you off. The cleft frame protects you here if you remember one thing. Whatever follows the words it is, that is your subject.

Tense watch. Valued is past simple, correctly scoped to what those households did during a childhood. Have built is present perfect for a completed programme with present results. The frame stays present simple.

Item twenty two. Rural depopulation.

The question. In many countries, young people are leaving rural areas to live in cities. Why is this happening. What effects does this have on rural communities.

Answer one. Scarce local employment pushes young people toward urban labor markets. Answer two. The resulting population decline erodes services and accelerates community aging.

Collocations to bank. Limited job prospects. An urban labor market. Population decline. An aging population. Erode local services.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Young people's migration to cities stems mainly from limited local employment, and this shift carries lasting consequences for the rural communities left behind.

Again, with the voice.

Young people's migration to cities stems mainly from limited local employment, and this shift carries lasting consequences for the rural communities left behind.

Answer to question one, cleft. It is the scarcity of skilled job opportunities in rural areas that primarily drives young people toward urban labor markets.

Illustration. Graduates from rural regions frequently report relocating to cities specifically because their qualifications have no local equivalent in employment.

Answer to question two, cleft. It is the resulting population decline that most severely undermines the viability of essential rural services.

Illustration. Villages experiencing sustained youth emigration have seen local schools and health clinics close for want of sufficient demand to sustain them.

Conclusion. Rural depopulation is therefore best understood as a direct consequence of economic disparity, one that further weakens the very communities young people leave behind.

Agreement watch. Scarcity drives. Decline undermines. Migration stems. Shift carries. Four abstract singular subjects, four verbs with the s, and in every case a plural noun sits nearby as a distractor. This item is the purest drill in the file for your first error pattern.

Tense watch. Have seen is present perfect for a closure that already happened and still matters. Everything else is present simple.

Item twenty three. Fiction against factual reading.

The question. Some people believe that reading fiction is a waste of time compared to reading factual material. Why might people hold this view. Do you agree with it.

Answer one. A results oriented mindset values only knowledge with direct application. Answer two. Disagree, since fiction builds empathy and interpretive skill.

Collocations to bank. Practical application. A results oriented mindset. Cultivate empathy. Critical thinking. Measurable knowledge.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

People who dismiss fiction as a waste of time typically hold a narrowly results oriented view of knowledge, one that overlooks the distinct cognitive benefits reading fiction provides.

Again, with the voice.

People who dismiss fiction as a waste of time typically hold a narrowly results oriented view of knowledge, one that overlooks the distinct cognitive benefits reading fiction provides.

Answer to question one, cleft. It is the expectation of immediate, measurable knowledge that leads some readers to dismiss fiction in favor of factual material.

Illustration. Professionals under time pressure often justify reading only material directly applicable to their work.

Answer to question two, position and cleft. It is precisely fiction's indirection, however, that cultivates the empathy and interpretive skill factual writing rarely demands.

Illustration. Studies of narrative reading have found that regular fiction readers score measurably higher on tests of social perspective taking than those who read fiction rarely.

Conclusion. Reading fiction therefore represents a distinct form of cognitive development that factual reading does not replicate.

Agreement watch. Expectation leads, singular. Indirection cultivates, singular. Studies have found, plural. People hold, plural. Notice how the relative clause who dismiss fiction sits between people and hold without changing anything.

Tense watch. Have found is present perfect for an established body of research. Everything else is present simple.

Item twenty four. Studying abroad.

The question. Many students choose to study abroad rather than in their home country. Why do they make this choice. What are the potential drawbacks of this decision.

Answer one. Students seek higher ranked institutions and stronger career prospects. Answer two. Distance from family support increases psychological strain and financial burden.

Collocations to bank. Career prospects. A support network. Psychological strain. A financial burden. An unfamiliar environment.

Now the thesis. Say it before the voice does.

Students who choose to study abroad are typically motivated by stronger career prospects, though this decision carries real personal and financial costs.

Again, with the voice.

Students who choose to study abroad are typically motivated by stronger career prospects, though this decision carries real personal and financial costs.

Answer to question one, cleft. It is the perception of superior career prospects that most strongly motivates students to pursue degrees abroad rather than at home.

Illustration. Graduates of internationally ranked universities frequently report greater ease securing employment with multinational companies.

Answer to question two, cleft. It is the resulting distance from established support networks that constitutes the most significant drawback of studying abroad.

Illustration. International students living far from family often report heightened psychological strain during exam periods, compounded by the financial pressure of foreign tuition and living costs.

Conclusion. Studying abroad therefore offers genuine long term career advantages, balanced against short term personal and financial strain that students should weigh carefully before committing.

Agreement watch. Perception motivates. Distance constitutes. Decision carries. All singular, all with the s. Students are, plural. Graduates report, plural.

Tense watch. Present simple throughout. Study abroad invites past narrative about your own experience. In this essay type there is no place for it.

Section six drill. The four theses in a row.

People's preference for physical or sedentary leisure stems largely from early upbringing, and several practical measures could encourage wider participation in physical activity.

Young people's migration to cities stems mainly from limited local employment, and this shift carries lasting consequences for the rural communities left behind.

People who dismiss fiction as a waste of time typically hold a narrowly results oriented view of knowledge, one that overlooks the distinct cognitive benefits reading fiction provides.

Students who choose to study abroad are typically motivated by stronger career prospects, though this decision carries real personal and financial costs.

SECTION SEVEN. SIX COMPLETE MODEL ESSAYS.

Every essay in this section runs past two hundred and fifty words, which is the exam minimum. The originals of several of these fell short, and an essay under the minimum loses marks before anyone assesses its argument. The safe target is between two hundred and sixty and two hundred and eighty words. Long enough to be safe. Short enough to finish and check.

Each essay is introduced by what to listen for and followed by what to notice. Listen to the essay as a whole first. The analysis afterward is where the learning sits.

Essay one. Opinion, one sided. University tuition.

Listen for the negative inversion in the third sentence, and for the moment the s returns to the verb once the inversion ends.

Here is the essay.

University tuition fees have become one of the most contested issues in education policy, with rising costs increasingly determining who can reach higher study at all. Not only does the current tuition system pose a significant barrier to low income students, but it also deprives the broader economy of a more skilled and adaptable workforce. This essay strongly agrees that university education should be provided free of charge.

The financial burden of university fees excludes many academically capable students from pursuing higher education. In countries where tuition remains prohibitively high, enrollment rates among low income families consistently lag behind those of wealthier peers, meaning that academic talent is filtered by financial background rather than genuine ability. Students from poorer households are also more likely to abandon a degree partway through, once paid work begins to compete with study for their time. This outcome is neither fair to individual students nor efficient for society as a whole.

Free access to higher education, moreover, equips a nation with a more highly skilled labor pool. In Germany, where public universities charge minimal fees, a higher proportion of graduates enter technical and scientific fields, sectors that in turn drive long term economic growth and innovation. A state funding those degrees is therefore not spending money so much as investing it, and the return arrives later as tax revenue from higher earnings.

University education should therefore be provided free of charge, since its long term benefits to society clearly outweigh the fiscal cost to the state. Removing tuition fees would ensure that ability, rather than income, determines who receives a university education.

End of the essay. This essay runs to two hundred and sixty-seven words.

What to notice. Three subjects that could have gone wrong. The tuition system, singular, governed by does in the inversion. Enrollment rates, plural, taking lag without the s. And a state funding those degrees, singular, taking is despite the plural word degrees immediately before it.

The tense spine is present simple. Have become in the opening sentence is present perfect, and it is earned, because the controversy built up and persists. Would ensure in the closing sentence is a conditional, not a tense shift.

Essay two. Opinion with a reservation. Local pollution against global climate policy.

Listen for the concession opening the third paragraph, and for the assertion that follows it without softening.

Here is the essay.

Governments face growing pressure to decide where limited environmental resources should go, toward visible local problems or toward the far larger and more abstract challenge of global warming. Governments should largely prioritize reducing local pollution, though climate change cannot be addressed through domestic measures alone.

Local pollution control produces immediate, measurable improvements in public health. Cities that have restricted vehicle emissions, such as London with its low emission zone, report swift reductions in respiratory illness, offering residents a tangible benefit that in turn strengthens public support for further environmental policy. That sequence matters politically as well as medically, since visible success makes the next and more difficult measure easier to legislate.

While reducing local pollution yields these tangible short term benefits, it is nonetheless true that climate change stems from transnational processes no single government can resolve in isolation. Rising sea levels driven by global emissions threaten coastal nations regardless of their own domestic pollution record, and a country that cleans its air perfectly may still lose its coastline. No amount of local diligence substitutes for a coordinated international agreement, and a government that pretends otherwise is offering its citizens clean air on an eroding shoreline.

Environmental policy should therefore combine vigorous local pollution control with sustained participation in international climate agreements. Focusing exclusively on either approach leaves a critical gap. Local measures alone ignore a genuinely global threat, while international agreements alone neglect the immediate health of citizens breathing polluted air today. The two operate on different timescales, and a government that treats them as competing priorities will end up serving neither well.

End of the essay. This essay runs to two hundred and sixty-four words.

What to notice. Two gerund subjects, reducing local pollution and focusing exclusively on either approach, both singular, both taking the s. The word nonetheless carries the pivot from concession to assertion, and nothing after it hedges. A concession that keeps apologising is not a concession, it is a retreat.

Essay three. Discussion. Compulsory against optional community service.

Listen for the parallel concession opening the second paragraph, and for the absence of any adjective judging either side before the conclusion.

Here is the essay.

High schools around the world increasingly incorporate community service into their curricula, yet opinions differ sharply over whether such service should be required or left to individual choice. Educators disagree over whether community service should be compulsory or optional during high school, each side citing distinct benefits for adolescent development.

While those in favor of compulsory service argue that mandatory participation instills a lasting sense of civic duty regardless of a student's initial interest, those who favor an optional approach stress that volunteering imposed as an obligation dilutes the genuine motivation that gives service its value. Schools that require a fixed number of service hours report that most students continue similar activities well after graduation, suggesting that a habit, once formed, can outlast the compulsion that created it.

The opposing case rests on what compulsion does to motivation itself. Students compelled to volunteer often complete only the minimum requirement, treating the activity as an administrative formality rather than a commitment, and some leave with a lasting resentment of the very institutions the programme was meant to support. Service given unwillingly may also be worth less to the organisation receiving it than the hours suggest.

On balance, a modest compulsory minimum, combined with the freedom to exceed it voluntarily, appears to capture the benefits both sides describe. Such an arrangement exposes every student to the experience of service, including those who would never have chosen it, while preserving the personal choice that sustains the habit beyond graduation. The threshold should stay low enough that exceeding it remains a decision rather than an expectation.

End of the essay. This essay runs to two hundred and sixty-two words.

What to notice. The body now runs across two paragraphs rather than one, which is safer under the coherence criterion. The parallel sentence still carries both views with equal weight. Neither side receives an adjective. Watch participation instills, singular, against those who argue, plural, inside the same sentence.

Essay four. Advantage and disadvantage. Freelance work.

Listen for the two participle clauses opening the body paragraphs, and check in each case which noun the participle attaches to.

Here is the essay.

The traditional nine to five career path is gradually giving way to more flexible forms of employment, with freelancing now a common choice across many industries. This shift toward freelance work carries distinct advantages and disadvantages for the modern workforce.

Granting workers direct control over their schedules, freelance arrangements allow individuals balancing family or health demands to structure their working hours around personal needs rather than a fixed employer timetable. Parents of young children frequently cite scheduling flexibility as their primary reason for leaving salaried positions in favor of independent work. The same logic applies to people managing a chronic illness, for whom a rigid attendance requirement can be the single barrier that ends a career. Autonomy over time is, for these workers, not a luxury but the condition of working at all.

Lacking the stability of a fixed salary, however, freelance workers remain exposed to considerable financial precarity. Without employer provided health insurance or retirement contributions, many freelancers must independently absorb costs that salaried employees receive automatically, leaving them more vulnerable during periods of illness or economic downturn. Income also arrives unevenly, so a strong year can mask the fact that no month is guaranteed, and a client who delays payment shifts that pressure directly onto the worker.

Freelance work therefore offers valuable autonomy at the cost of financial security, a trade off each worker must weigh according to their own circumstances. For some, the freedom to set one's own hours will outweigh the risk. For others, particularly those supporting dependents on a single income, the predictability of a salary will remain the stronger claim.

End of the essay. This essay runs to two hundred and sixty-six words.

What to notice. Granting attaches to freelance arrangements, which do the granting. Lacking attaches to freelance workers, who do the lacking. Neither dangles. The final paragraph deliberately breaks a long sentence into two short ones, which is a legitimate way to close and reads as control rather than as simplicity.

Essay five. Problem and solution. Traffic congestion.

Listen for the absent construction opening the second paragraph, and for the three part passive in the third.

Here is the essay.

Traffic congestion has become one of the most visible problems facing major cities worldwide, with commuters in many urban centers now losing hours each week to gridlock. This essay argues that congestion stems primarily from unchecked population growth outpacing infrastructure, and that effective solutions require significant investment in public transport.

Absent adequate investment in road and transit infrastructure, rapid urban population growth has left many cities' transport networks unable to accommodate current demand. In rapidly expanding cities such as Manila, road capacity has remained largely unchanged for decades despite a sharp rise in vehicle ownership, so the same roads must now carry far more traffic than they were ever designed for. Widening them further is rarely possible, since the land alongside them has already been built on.

Substantial funding must be allocated to expanding public transit networks if congestion is to be meaningfully reduced. Cities that have introduced congestion pricing, such as Stockholm, have seen measurable declines in peak hour traffic within a few years of implementation, demonstrating that demand for road space, like demand for any other scarce resource, responds to price. Pricing alone is not enough, however, because charging drivers to enter a city only works where a genuine alternative exists.

Addressing traffic congestion therefore requires both restraining private vehicle use through pricing measures and expanding affordable public transport that gives commuters a real substitute for driving. Neither half works in isolation, and the sequence in which they arrive matters as much as the policies themselves. A city that prices road space without building alternatives merely taxes the people least able to avoid the charge.

End of the essay. This essay runs to two hundred and sixty-seven words.

What to notice. The word absent replaces a whole subordinate clause and is a genuine band eight construction. If it will not come on exam day, the word without does the same job at a fraction of the risk. In the passive, keep must, then be, then allocated, as one unit. Growth has left is singular, and networks arriving straight afterward is the distractor.

Essay six. Two part question. Physical against sedentary leisure.

Listen for the two cleft sentences, and for the singular verb that follows each one.

Here is the essay.

People differ markedly in how they choose to spend their free time, with some gravitating toward sport and exercise while others prefer reading, gaming, or other sedentary pastimes. This essay argues that such preferences stem largely from early upbringing, and that several practical measures could encourage wider participation in physical activity regardless of a person's starting point.

It is early exposure to sport during childhood that most strongly predicts an adult's preference for physical leisure activities. Individuals raised in households that valued outdoor play are considerably more likely to maintain active hobbies later in life, having internalised physical activity as a normal part of the day rather than an effortful obligation. Where that early exposure is missing, exercise tends to be experienced as something added to life at a cost, which makes it the first thing abandoned when time runs short.

It is, however, the availability of affordable and accessible facilities that most effectively encourages otherwise sedentary adults to take up physical activity later in life. Local governments that have built free public sports facilities, such as outdoor gyms and running tracks, report increased participation even among residents who previously exercised rarely, suggesting that convenience can override long established habit. Distance and cost turn out to matter more than motivation, or rather they determine how much motivation a person needs before they begin.

Personal preference for physical activity is therefore rooted primarily in upbringing, yet accessible infrastructure can meaningfully shift behavior well into adulthood. Habit forms early, but it is not fixed, and the practical measures that change it are unglamorous ones. Build the facility close enough and make it free.

End of the essay. This essay runs to two hundred and seventy-one words.

What to notice. Exposure predicts and availability encourages, both singular, both with a plural noun waiting nearby to trip the agreement. The cleft frame is your protection. Whatever follows the words it is, that is the subject, and it is almost always singular.

CLOSING DRILL. THE TWENTY FOUR THESES IN SEQUENCE.

No commentary. Say each one before the voice does, then say it along with the voice.

FINAL CHECKLIST FOR EXAM DAY.

One. Find the head noun before you write the verb. Everything between the head noun and the verb is decoration.

Two. Abstract singular subjects take the s. Exposure, growth, migration, scarcity, availability, perception, distance, effort, interaction, packaging, regulation, proximity.

Three. Gerund subjects are singular however long they are. Reducing local pollution produces. Eliminating the daily commute and office distractions sustains.

Four. After not only, the auxiliary carries the agreement and the main verb stays bare. Once the inversion ends, the s comes back.

Five. Present simple is the spine. Past simple only for one dated event. Present perfect only for a completed change that still matters.

Six. Passives keep three parts. Modal, then be, then participle.

Seven. If a participle clause would attach to the wrong noun, open with because instead.

Eight. If a target structure does not arrive within a few seconds, take the fallback and keep writing. A clean simple sentence scores higher than a broken complex one.

Nine. Past two hundred and fifty words, always. Two hundred and sixty to two hundred and eighty is the safe band.

Ten. Leave three minutes at the end and read only for the two error patterns. Nothing else. Agreement, then tense.

End of file.
