# Task 1 Academic: Reading the Chart Before You Write

Other pages on this site give you the phrases and the paragraph template. This one gives you the step that happens before any of that: figuring out what the chart is actually telling you, and picking the two or three things worth writing about. Most Task 1 scores are lost here, not in the vocabulary.

If you already know the four-paragraph structure and the trend vocabulary, this page assumes that. It does not repeat it.

## Why This Step Gets Skipped

Under a 20-minute clock, the instinct is to start writing the moment you've glanced at the chart. That produces one of two failures.

Either you transcribe — describing numbers in the order they appear, left to right, with no sense of which ones matter. Or you freeze on a chart with a lot of categories and try to mention all of them, running out of time and words before you reach a real comparison.

Both failures share one cause: you started composing sentences before you decided what the report was about. Reading the chart is a separate step. Give it a fixed sixty to ninety seconds, before you write the first word.

## What a Prompt Is Actually Made Of

Every Academic Task 1 prompt has the same three parts, regardless of chart type:

1. **A frame sentence** — one line naming the subject, the place (if any), and the time span (if any).
2. **The graphic** — the actual data.
3. **A fixed instruction** — summarize, select, report the main features, compare where relevant. This sentence never changes and tells you nothing about the specific chart, so stop re-reading it after the first time.

Your entire reading job lives in parts 1 and 2. Pull three things out of the frame sentence before you look closely at the graphic: the **subject** (what is being measured), the **scope** (how many categories, countries, or items), and the **span** (a fixed date, a range of years, or no time reference at all — which decides your tense before you've written anything).

Only after that do you look at the numbers.

## The Five-Second Scan

Before you hunt for trends, confirm four things about the graphic itself. Skipping this step is how candidates misread a chart that they could have read correctly in five extra seconds.

- **Title or caption** — confirms the subject matches the frame sentence.
- **Axes or column headings** — what is on each axis, and in what order.
- **Units** — percentages, raw counts, currency, or an unlabeled unit you must infer. Write the unit down mentally before you write a single figure; mixing "percent" and "percentage points" is one of the most common accuracy errors in this task.
- **Legend or key** — which line, bar, or shade maps to which category, checked before you start describing "the top line" from memory.

Only once these four are confirmed do you start looking for what to say.

## Hunting for the Two or Three Features That Matter

A chart with twelve data points does not require twelve sentences. It requires you to find the two or three facts that would still be true if you deleted every other number. Look for these, roughly in this order of usefulness:

- **The extremes.** The single highest and single lowest value across the whole chart, not just within one category.
- **The biggest mover.** Whichever category changed the most, in either direction — this is almost always worth a sentence even if it isn't the biggest value.
- **A reversal or crossing point.** Two lines or bars that swap rank between the start and the end, or a category that overtakes another partway through.
- **An exception to an otherwise clean pattern.** If five categories rise and one falls, the falling one is more valuable to mention than any one of the five that rose.
- **What barely changed.** Stability is a feature too, and naming it (correctly, in one sentence) is often the fastest way to round out an overview without inventing a third trend that isn't really there.

Two of these, stated in the overview and expanded with figures in the body paragraphs, are enough for a complete report. You are not required to explain every category, only to prove you can tell which ones are worth explaining.

## Type by Type: Where the Signal Usually Is

Note the table row in particular: for a table, resist the pull toward the numbers first. A table gives you no visual shortcut the way a line or a bar does, so if you start with the figures you will start transcribing. Start with the headings, decide which dimension (rows or columns) is more informative to group by, and only then read the values inside it.

## A Worked Scan

Here is the method applied to a chart that isn't taken from any existing example on this site. Imagine a bar chart titled: *"Share of leisure time UK teenagers reported spending on five app categories, 2015 and 2023."* Categories: gaming, messaging, social media, video streaming, education apps.

**Frame sentence gives you:** subject = leisure time on app categories; scope = five categories, one country; span = two fixed years, no ongoing time series, so past simple throughout.

**Five-second scan:** units are percentages of leisure time (they won't sum to a fixed total the way a single pie chart would, so don't assume they add to 100). Two bars per category, one per year.

**Hunting for features**, imagining the following figures: gaming 40% → 18%, video streaming 10% → 30%, social media 25% → 38%, messaging 20% → 10%, education apps 5% → 4%.

- Extremes: gaming was the highest category in 2015; social media is the highest in 2023.
- Biggest mover: video streaming, tripling its share.
- Reversal: gaming and social media effectively swap positions at the top.
- Barely changed: education apps, worth one short clause, not a paragraph.

**That scan converts directly into an overview with no numbers in it:**

> Overall, gaming's dominant share of teenage leisure time in 2015 had been overtaken by social media and video streaming by 2023, while messaging fell back and interest in education apps remained consistently marginal throughout.

Everything in that sentence came from the scan, not from staring at five numbers and describing them in the order printed. The body paragraphs — one for the categories that grew, one for those that shrank — now write themselves, because the grouping decision was made during the scan, not during the sentence.

## Two Grammar Traps That Have Nothing to Do With Tense

Tense and subject-verb agreement get most of the attention in Task 1 corrections. Prepositions and articles cause just as many small errors, and they're rarely covered separately.

**Prepositions that go wrong most often in a report:**

| an increase **of** twelve points | an increase **in** twelve points (use "of" for the amount, "in" for the thing changing) |
| the highest **among** the five cities | the highest **between** the five cities ("between" is for exactly two) |
| compared **with** the previous year | compared **to the** previous year (both exist, but don't mix "compared to" with "the") |
| accounted **for** a third of the total | accounted **of** a third of the total |

**Articles, specifically for report writing:**

- Use **the** the second time you refer to something already named. *A line graph shows two categories... The first category rose steadily.*
- Drop the article before a plural or uncountable noun used generally. *Expenditure rose* — not *the expenditure rose* — unless you mean one specific, already-identified quantity.
- Use **the** before a superlative. *The highest figure*, *the smallest share* — never *highest figure* on its own.
- Don't add an article before a country or continent used as a general reference. *Spending in Japan*, not *spending in the Japan.*

None of this is exciting to drill, but a report that is otherwise well-organized loses more marks than it should to five or six of these slips scattered across 170 words.

## Before You Write: The Checklist

- Read the frame sentence for subject, scope, and span. Decide your tense now, from the span alone.
- Run the five-second scan: title, axes or headings, units, legend.
- Find two or three features using the extremes / biggest mover / reversal / exception / stability list — not all of the data.
- Decide your grouping (by direction, by rank, by time, or by half) from those features, before you write the overview.
- Write the overview with zero numbers in it. If a number appears in your overview draft, it belongs in a body paragraph instead.
- Check prepositions and articles in your final read, alongside tense and agreement.

Sixty seconds of this, done deliberately, saves more band score than any single phrase you could memorize.
